The Phantom Menace Opening Scene

Use of Camera: At the beginning of Phantom Menace we get a long shot, at first its of a space craft and then we follow it and it allows us to also see planet earth. This already indicates to us that this film is likely to be a Sci-Fi. We also know this as Star Wars is iconically known for being a Sci-Fi. After this we find ourselves inside the spacecraft, we can see all the characters with an over the shoulder shot, which contains 4 characters. We get a long shot in order to see two of the characters in clocks be welcomed by a silver robot. We then get a medium two shot, this allows us to see the two men having a conversation.

Use of sound: We hear the sound of an aircraft, this supports the evidence that it is taking place inside space. We hear non-digetic sound, this is the music playing in the background as the spaceship is flying towards the base. It sounds as if it is trying to build up to something big due to the speed and strength of the orchestra.

Use of titles:

Mise en Scene: At the beginning we get to see the location in which this film is going to take place, we are seen this with an establishing shot. We then see the clothing of the characters, they are all wearing cloaks, these are good as it will allow them to hide their identity and it will also be easy to distinguish them from the antagonists. Once they have landed their aircraft we see they have landed in a base, they may be here as they are trying to say safe.

Romantic conventions

There are many cliches in romantic films, one of the most commonly used story lines is that there is an ugly unpopular girl that tends to have a crush on the most popular guy in school. In the end she will end up getting a chance to go out and fall in love and live happily ever after.

When we think of the cliches we normally think of there being a lot of kissing, which is to be expected as it is a romantic film and is about love, there is normally a best friend that is weird or may even portray her best friend.

Target Audience

The target age would be teenagers and people in their 20's. This is why most horrors are rated 15 or 18 so that they allow teenagers to watch their films if they were always rated over 18 then they would not be able to see the film.
